The Rosendale Mines

The limestone mines in and around Rosendale NY were large producers of natural cement during the late 19th and early 20th century. The mines produced dolostone, a type of limestone with high clay content. By just heading and grinding natural cement is created where no chemical additives are needed as they are with modern cements. The cement is also hydraulic, that is, it will set under water. Rosendale cement was used in the production of many landmarks including the base of the Brooklyn Bridge, the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty, Federal Hall and one of the wings of the United States Capital building. These mines are now abandoned but their massive workings still exist.

Our research was conducted by visiting these mines between 2008 and 2009, over a dozen visits were conducted and many mines entered by our trained and experienced staff. Our entry methods were horizontal, sloped and even vertical using specialized rappel and ascension gear.

ABM wants to thank the Century House, as well as the individual land owners that were kind enough to allow us to document and publish these images. Many of the specific mines will not be mentioned as the owners have asked to keep their locations and names private.
