Hamburg Lime Kilns

The Hamburg area in Sussex county was a huge lime mining area. Even its residents dont know this, but there are 120 year old Lime Kilns deep in the woods of Hamburg, these lime kilns cost 50 thousand dollars in 1880's to build. They ran 24/7 at intense heat. there were 4 in all and one of them is still standing remarkably intact,  even though they are not preserved officially.

If you look closely you can find the tramway which went all the way back to crystal springs 3 miles away. Some of the old tramway lines are now creeks, but the trained eye can notice a natural made creek from one that used to be a tramway.

In the late 1800's there were 3 large lime companies working in Hamburg, one, the Atlas Lime Company which is what is now Heritage Lakes, the Windsor Lime works which is now Crystal Springs, and the Mcafee Lime Works which is behind the Mcafee Bible School (there are 3 small lime kilns in those woods also..

The Old Windsor Lime Works tramway as seen from route 517.

The chimney on this 120 year old Lime kiln is still intact!!
